Safe sunscreens for summer

Updated: Jun 2

Summer is coming! And so is lots of time outside in the sun.

Here's some sunscreens I won't be using for our family:

ree

Every one of them has at least one of the following ingredients:

  • oxybenzone - disrupts hormones and may be carcinogenic)

  • octinoxate - may disrupt hormones and is toxic to aquatic life

  • avobenzone - interferes with metabolism, can negatively impact pregnancy, and may disrupt hormones

  • octocrylene - may disrupt hormones and is toxic to aquatic life

  • octisalate - may damage babies in utero and is very toxic to aquatic life

  • homosalate - damages DNA, may damage babies in utero, and is very toxic to aquatic life

or an ingredient from my always avoid list:

  • parabens

  • phthalates

  • PEGs

  • PPGs

  • Fragrance

  • Phenoxyethanol

  • PABAs

  • aluminum

Here are the sunscreens I WOULD recommend for you and your whole family:

  1. Crunchi Sunlight Body + Daily Facial Sunscreen (code ADVOCATE10 for 10% off for new clients orders of $50+) - this is the sunscreen my entire family uses!

  2. ThinkBaby Clear Zinc Sunscreen

  3. Babo Botanicals Baby Skin Mineral Sunscreen Lotion

  4. ATTITUDE Sunly Kids Mineral Sunscreen, Unscented

  5. Stream2Sea Every Day Mineral Kids Sunscreen

  6. ree

Primally Pure Sun Cream, Facial Stick, and SPF Lip Balm - these are brand new and ingredients are 10/10 (only downfall is they are packaged in plastic but otherwise 100% OrganiMama approved.

In my healing journey, I mostly stopped wearing sunscreen and instead I focused on appropriate sun exposure - no more than 30-45 minutes in direct sunlight at a time, and choosing long sleeves, hats, or shade if staying out longer. If I am out in direct sun for longer than that 30 - 45 minutes, THEN I will use a toxin free sunscreen.

Sunlight is GOOD for you so aim for 30 minutes of direct sunlight every day to support your body and its circadian rhythm.
