Painting Your Home: Low Tox Edition

There are a few things to consider when you are thinking about paint (whether that is the paint already on your walls or you are looking for options to repaint your home).

Here is what I look for:

  1. Low VOC paint

  2. No other toxic chemicals like PFAS or phthalates

  3. GREENGUARD Gold Certified

Here are a few paint brands and types that are excellent choices:

  1. ECOS

  2. Sherwin Williams SuperPaint

  3. AMF Safecoat

  4. Sherwin Williams Emerald Line

If you already have paint on your walls that you know isn’t low tox, there are two options. Low tox paint can seal in other more toxic paints that are already on the wall, so you can always just pick one of the paints above and repaint! The other option is to make sure you have great HEPA air purifiers and run those in the rooms you are concerned about! We love our AirDoctor Air Purifiers.

When we paint with low tox paint, we still run our AirDoctors for several days in those rooms to clear out anything that is lingering. We also don’t let our kids sleep in those freshly painted rooms for at least 7 days.
