Low Tox Christmas Trees

Debating between an artificial tree or a real tree this year? Both come with caveats but you can find a low tox option to keep your family safe over the holidays.


For real trees, you can run into issues with pesticides and mold so you will want to look for a local Christmas tree farm that advertises as organic or pesticide free, and be sure to check the trees first for bugs or visible mold before purchasing. Also, be very mindful of not spilling water (mold risk) around the base when watering your tree throughout the holiday season.


No artificial tree is fully toxin free since they are made from plastic, but the main thing to look for is trees that do not use PVC (the MOST toxic plastic that often contains phthalates) in the branches. It is ideal to handle Christmas trees with gloves, and not to let kids touch them, since most trees may have lead or other surface toxins. It can also help to run an air purifier nearby (my favorite air purifier)! I've linked some good options without PVC branches at various price points below:
